Liverpool had a scout at Lille's Ligue 1 game against Guingamp last weekend to watch Danish defender Simon Kjaer, according to French outlet Mercato 365.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is already thinking ahead to which players he may require in the summer and Kjaer's name has popped onto the radar at Anfield.

A scout was sent to check up on the former Wolfsburg man, in a game which Lille kept a clean sheet and won 1-0. Kjaer played all 90 minutes in the match.

The 25-year-old has long been tipped to become one of the best centre-backs in world football, but has flattered to deceive.

Wolfsburg snapped the Dane up for a fee of around £10m in 2010, beating off interest from a while host of clubs, including Manchester United, Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur.

His spell at the Volkswagen Arena did not catch fire though and he was loaned to Serie A giants Roma in 2011 for the season.

Again at Roma, Kjaer failed to hit the heights expected and the Giallorossi did not push to keep him on a permanent basis.

Kjaer joined Lille in 2013, penning a four-year contract.
