Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is eyeing his side overhauling both Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League to finish second this season.

The Dutchman's side scored an impressive 2-1 win away at top four rivals Liverpool today, something which increased the gap between themselves and the fifth placed Reds to five points, giving the Red Devils a buffer zone in the league.

The breathing space is allowing Van Gaal to now look upwards as he aims for Manchester United to finish second in the league. Manchester United are one point behind Arsenal and two off Manchester City.

Van Gaal told MUTV: "I'm very happy that we've won and that we've opened up a gap from the teams below us.

"We can still look up and finish second.

"It is a significant win because we're five points ahead of Liverpool now but, if we'd lost, we would have been a point behind them. The win is very important."

Two goals from Juan Mata at Anfield, either side of half time, put the game beyond Liverpool, whose consolation came through Daniel Sturridge with 20 minutes left.

Liverpool found themselves up against it within a minute of the start of the second half, when Steven Gerrard, on as a substitute, was sent off for stamping on Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera.
