Former Arsenal full-back Giovanni van Bronckhorst will take over the manager’s role at Eredivisie giants Feyenoord this summer.

The former Netherlands international will replace Fred Rutten, who will leave the Dutch club at the end of the season when his contract expires.

The 40-year-old was an assistant to Ronald Koeman at Feyenoord until the former Barcelona man took charge of Southampton last summer and is also serving in Rutten’s backroom staff.

Van Bronckhorst enjoyed an illustrious playing career, both at club level and for the Netherlands on the international stage. He played for the likes of Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona and also made 232 appearances for Feyenoord, spread across two spells

The Dutchman ended his career after the Netherlands were beaten by Spain in the World Cup final in 2010 at Soccer City, Johannesburg. Coincidentally, he also made his debut for his country at the same stadium in a friendly against South Africa in 1996.
