Wesley Sneijder will wear the captain's armband for the Netherlands over the international break for the first time since being stripped of the captaincy by Louis van Gaal in 2013.

Van Gaal installed Robin van Persie as Netherlands captain, explaining at the time that his captain had to be someone guaranteed an international call-up, which was not the case with Sneijder at the time.

Van Persie is absent from the Netherlands latest squad through injury and Sneijder will wear the armband against Turkey and Spain.

And Oranje boss Guus Hiddink, who succeeded Van Gaal, is only too happy to throw the Galatasaray midfielder the armband, something he knows has delighted him.

Hiddink told De Telegraaf: "We have many young players and we have some guys who have been here longer. So Sneijder seems to be a suitable candidate.

"That's what I told him and he really liked it", Hiddink added.

Sneijder is set to have a crucial role to play for the Netherlands in their vital Euro 2016 qualifier against Turkey, especially as Arjen Robben is also absent with injury, along with Van Persie.

Hiddink is likely to trust in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Memphis Depay and Luciano Narsingh to form his attacking line to tackle the Turks.
