Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini has said that he expected a win from his side’s game against Sampdoria last Sunday, but he is optimistic of a strong finish to the season if his team can carry on their weekend form until the end of the campaign.

In a keenly contested battle Citadin Eder’s 65th minute strike ended the match in Sampdoria’s favour; the Nerazzurri’s defeat left them tenth in the league and made their quest for a finish among the European spots ever more difficult.

Mancini took the reins of Inter last November following the sacking of Walter Mazzarri, and the former Manchester City manager significantly boosted his squad in the winter transfer window, notably signing Lukas Podolski and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Inter have failed to register a single win this month; of their six matches across Serie A and the Europa League, they lost four and drew the other two.

“It has been a difficult month and I'm not happy with the results”, Mancini told the club website.

“We need to try to overcome this tricky period and get back to winning ways.

“I can't say much to my players because I'm happy with our performance [at Sampdoria].

“It's hard to explain how we lost a game that we deserved to win. We were pulling the strings and one free-kick changed the game.”

However, Inter’s performance against Sampdoria gives Mancini confidence and he feels that if his side can replicate their weekend display then can finish the season on a strong footing.

“There are ten matches to play and we have to continue to play as we did against Samp.

“We have to continue to work and come out of this situation.”
