England captain Wayne Rooney has stressed that it is important that Harry Kane doesn’t feel too much pressure too early in his career.

The man who has scored 29 goals in all competitions this season was not even a regular at Tottenham Hotspur early in their campaign and only made his first league start this term against Stoke in November.

Since then Kane has not looked back and has been banging in goals for fun, which has also earned him a place in the England squad to face Lithuania and Italy.

The 21-year-old is set to make his debut for the senior national team in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania tonight to mark a sensational season for the striker.

However, Rooney stressed that it is important Kane is burdened with a heavy set of expectations too early in his career as it might have a detrimental effect on his development.

The England captain knows what it feels like to carry the burden of expectation from a young age and insisted that it is important that the Tottenham forward is allowed the freedom to do what he does best for the moment.

"He hasn't even played a full season in the Premier League yet", Rooney was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"So, although he has done really well, we have to give him room to breathe rather than smothering him and demanding a lot at an early age.

"We should give him time. Let him continue to do what he is doing and that will be the best way to get the best out of him.”
