Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has revealed he would love to see Zlatan Ibrahimovic plying his trade at Old Trafford, feeling the powerful striker was "born" for his former club.

Last summer Ibrahimovic was linked with moving to the Red Devils, but stayed put at French champions Paris Saint-Germain, where he is the club's talisman and driving force.

Schmeichel admits he would have loved the Sweden star to have made the move to Manchester United, where he believes he would flourish as the environment would be perfect for him to express himself. And the goalkeeper explained that at Old Trafford the set-up is specifically tailored to get the best out of big personalities.

"What he does with PSG is incredible", the former goalkeeper told L'Equipe.

"He gives PSG so much credibility and visibility. He's someone who takes responsibility.

"Last summer there were rumours according to which he was said to be moving to Manchester United. I said then that Zlatan was built for the club. That he was born to play there.

"Why was [Eric] Cantona so strong when he was there and not at Leeds, nor at the other clubs in France? Why? Because it's Manchester United.

"At Manchester [United] players are given freedom, but they also have responsibilities. And no one worries about who you are or what you like, they look at what you do on the pitch and the influence you have on the club.

"If you don't respect that, you go.

"But it doesn't matter what personality you have. [David] Beckham and Cantona could flourish and be at their highest level there.

"There are hundreds of players who try to be a Beckham or a Cantona, but who haven't got the personality for it and they fail."

Ibrahimovic, whose contract with PSG runs until the summer of 2016, has netted an impressive 99 goals in 122 games for the French champions since signing in 2012.

The 33-year-old, who is regarded as one of football's biggest personalities, has made more appearances for PSG than for any of his previous clubs, a list which includes Ajax, Barcelona, AC Milan, Juventus and Inter.
