Wayne Rooney feels that England have created a sense of excitement given their progress since returning from a dismal World Cup last summer.

England could not win a game in Brazil and went out of the World Cup at the group stage. However, since the summer debacle their form has improved, with seven games played and seven won, five of which have been Euro 2016 qualifiers, a record which puts the Three Lions in charge at the top of their group.

England's latest victory was a 4-0 win over Lithuania on Friday evening, while next up for the Three Lions is a friendly against Italy tomorrow night.

And Rooney is upbeat about England at present, being quoted as saying by the BBC: "It is moving in a good direction.

"We are learning with every game since the World Cup.

"We are getting better and there is an excitement back about England."

However, Rooney is expecting a tough test for England against Italy, a side they lost to in their opening World Cup group game and one he appreciates may dominate possession.

"Italy will be very good on the ball and there will be times when they are able to play out so we have to make sure we pick our moments right and not get picked off.

"There will be times when we go, times when we sit off."
