Qatari club Al Sadd’s president Mohammad al Ali has confirmed that they are trying to sign veteran Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez.

The 35-year-old Spaniard was in the Middle Eastern country last week to discuss a potential deal that would see him join Al Sadd in the future.

The Spaniard is believed to be set to put pen to paper to a multi-year contract with Al Sadd, which would earn him around €10m per season and will have an option for an additional year.

While Xavi has yet to confirm the talk of a move to Qatar, the club president revealed that the club are trying to sign the former Spanish international.

He also added that if they manage to rope in the Barcelona man, then he could become the global ambassador of Qatari football.

"We hope to sign him", Al Ali told Marca.

"We really like his charisma and the way he controls the ball.

“He represents passing football, and we want him to be an ambassador for Qatar's football.”

It has been speculated that Xavi has also been offered a coaching role at the club’s Aspire Academy to train the country’s next generation of footballers.
