Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has revealed that given an opportunity he would have chosen to play alongside England great Alan Shearer in a strike partnership.

Rooney has been a mainstay for the England national team for the better part of a decade since he made his debut in 2003 and he has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the Three Lions.

Throughout his England career, the 29-year-old has played with a number of strike partners including Michael Owen, Peter Crouch, Emile Heskey, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck amongst others.

And when he was asked who he would have liked to play alongside but he didn’t have the opportunity to, Rooney answered that Shearer would be his strike partner of choice.

“I'd probably say Alan Shearer because I admired him when I was growing up”, he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Shearer went on to score 30 goals for the senior national side and is the highest goalscorer in the Premier League history. And Rooney feels that their partnership would have worked like a charm.

“I loved the way he played and he was a real goalscorer, as his record showed.

“I would have worked well with him as a strike partner.”
