Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has revealed that he has passed on the advice he received from Red Devils legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Everton midfielder Ross Barkley to help the youngster succeed.

Barkley and Rooney are part of Roy Hodgson’s squad that defeated Lithuania in their Euro 2016 qualifier last week and are in line for an appearance in the Three Lions’ friendly against Italy tonight.

The Everton midfielder came on as a 71st minute substitute for Jordan Henderson as England routed Lithuania 4-0 at Wembley, but the youngster went into the national team bereft of form.

The 21-year-old has received encouragement from England captain Rooney, who has revealed that he has passed on the same advice that Solskjaer gave him when he was young and that is to pay close attention to the match from the substitutes’ bench which will give him a great view of the opposition's strengths and weaknesses which he can exploit once he gets on the pitch.

“I spoke to him after the game on Friday night and the only advice I gave him was to watch the game carefully from the bench, then he will know how to get into the opposition, where the spaces are”, Rooney was quoted as saying by the BBC.
