Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Inter sold Philippe Coutinho to the Reds because they needed the money and not because they were unsure about the midfielder's quality.

Coutinho has been in fine form for Liverpool since he arrived from Inter in the January 2013 transfer window and this evening turned in another accomplished performance as the Reds downed Newcastle United 2-0 at Anfield.

Initially upon Coutinho's signing some eyebrows were raised at the price Inter allowed him to leave for, leaving many wondering if the Brazilian was a player who had not impressed the Nerazzurri.

But Rodgers says that could not be further from the truth and told Sky Sports: "We only paid £8m for him and it was only due to them, Inter Milan, needing funds.

"I think you see him now really orchestrating the game for us. He looks fit and strong and has had a wonderful season."

And looking specifically at Coutinho's performance against Newcastle, Rodgers said: "He played in that hole between the midfield and their defence and was outstanding. He showed why he is one of the best players in the best league in the world."

Coutinho will be looking to get his hands on his first trophy as a Liverpool player this season, with the Reds into the semi-final of the FA Cup, where a clash with Aston Villa is on the menu next weekend.
