Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs has revealed why former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner was absent from the club's squad for their game against Schalke today.

Bendtner, who joined Wolfsburg from Arsenal last summer, played no part in the 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Schalke at the Volkswagen Arena.

Questions were instantly asked at why the Danish international missed out on a squad spot for the crunch Bundesliga contest – and now Allofs has confirmed why Bendtner was absent, with the reason being that he broke club rules.

Allofs, revealing the reason for the striker's absence, told Bild: "He came in an hour late for the final training session and we have rules.

"There are many ways to find out what time training is.

"And the traffic is not so bad in Wolfsburg", he added, in a hint at Bendtner's possible excuse.

Bendtner scored Wolfsburg's only goal in their 4-1 home defeat to Napoli last Thursday and will hope to be back in the Wolves' good books to play his part in the return leg in Italy this coming Thursday.

Wolfsburg currently sit second in the Bundesliga, 12 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
