Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie feels that the Reds never really turned up for their FA Cup semi-final clash against Aston Villa yesterday.

The Reds took the lead in the first half through a Philippe Coutinho goal but Christian Benteke equalised before the break to put Villa back on level terms.

Fabian Delph scored the winner for Tim Sherwood’s side in the 54th minute to send them through to the final of the FA Cup where they will face Arsenal next month.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted that his side lacked energy throughout the game and Villa were the better side. Liverpool legend Gillespie feels the same and chastised his former team for failing to turn up on the big day.

He admits losing a semi-final is never a nice feeling for any team but stressed the Villans were the better team on the day and deserved to be in the final at the expense of Rodgers’ men.

“It is never nice to lose in a semi-final so a little disappointed”, Gillespie told LFC TV.

“From Liverpool’s point of view, we didn’t quite turn up on the day; too many people had an off day and when you have that sort of performance, you expect to get beaten.

“But being fair to Aston Villa, over the 90 minutes they were the better team and deserved to go through in the final.”
