Louis van Gaal has stressed that he had to make structural changes at Manchester United this season but believes his team will fight for the Premier League title next season.

The Dutchman weathered a difficult start to the season to guide Manchester United back into the top four and they are on their way to sealing a Champions League berth for next season.

A bad start to the season brought criticism of Van Gaal’s style of play but the former Ajax boss stressed that his team’s football was not his only concern when he arrived at Old Trafford last summer.

Van Gaal changed the training methods of the team and made some changes to their facilities at Carrington, such as pushing the club to install floodlights to allow better utilisation of the complex.

The Dutchman admits that he would have liked to have won something this season but stressed the changes he made were always going to take some time to settle down.

However, he is confident that Manchester United will be strong enough to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

“Normally our philosophy shall bring titles but we have to make a big change not only in philosophy, also in the accommodation [the training facilities], the structure of the club and so on”, Van Gaal told the club’s official website.

“We are working at that.

“I have a period of three years and I would be pleased to give a championship or a title in those three years, but maybe we can do that next year.”
