Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits that his team’s warm-up session before their match against Everton yesterday was an indicator of their eventual lacklustre performance.

Van Gaal's Manchester United suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Everton at Goodison Park yesterday and the Dutchman did say that Roberto Martinez’s men deserved the win.

Though they again controlled possession, the Red Devils failed to pose difficult questions for Everton’s defence and the home side were lethal on the counter throughout the game.

The Manchester United boss admits that he knew something was amiss with his team during the warm-up ahead of the match but was hoping that they would click towards the final moments of the game, which never really materialised.

Van Gaal also believes Everton were the better prepared team and admits that it is not surprising that they caught Manchester United napping on the day.

"I had the feeling; the warm-up was not so good", Van Gaal told the BBC.

"In the last minutes before the game you hope you can recover and stimulate your players but then it is too late.

"You have to prepare the match already two or three days before and Everton have done that and they have won because of that."

Though still in the top four, Manchester United will aim to bag all three points at Old Trafford next weekend against West Brom to consolidate their position.
