Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists that the Reds have taken great strides forward during his close to three-year reign at the club.

Rodgers took charge of the Merseyside giants in the summer of 2012 following the sacking of Kenny Dalglish and guided them to brink of the Premier League title last season as they finished runners-up to Manchester City by a mere two points and subsequently qualified for the Champions League for the first time in five years.

When the 42-year-old took charge of Liverpool in the 2012/13 season, they had finished eighth in the league in the previous campaign. And Rodgers feels that Liverpool have moved in the right direction under his management.

“When I came in here, [the title] was a long way off”, he told his club’s site.

“The club was eighth and you would never even have talked about it.

“I think it's a mark of how the club has moved forward that there's such disappointment around that we weren't challenging this year.”

Liverpool are currently lying fifth in the table and their challenge for a spot in next season’s Champions League has significantly weakened following their recent run of poor results.

But Rodgers feels his team will be back among the top four contenders next season.

“So that's a great marker for how well the team have done and how the club has moved forward. Of course it has been disappointing not to have had a challenge this year.

“But when you have a sense of perspective, then that allows you to look forward with a greater hope that we can really push on again next season.”
