Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola feels the Bavarians were the better team last night in their German Cup semi-final against Borussia Dortmund and losing on penalties was just down to hard luck.

The Bavarians took the lead in the first half when Robert Lewandowski scored against his former side but Dortmund equalised with a Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang goal in the 75th minute.

Both sides failed to score again in the remaining minutes of normal time or in extra time, which dragged the game into the penalties, where Dortmund prevailed 2-0.

Despite their loss, the Bayern Munich boss feels his side were the better team on the night and played well enough to make it to the final of the German Cup.

"Congratulations to BVB. But I would also like to congratulate my team too. I'm very happy with my team's performance tonight”, Guardiola was quoted as saying by Dortmund’s official website.

“I felt that we played well. After they got the equaliser we had one or two problems, but we reasserted our authority on the game.”

Only Sebastian Kehl and Ilkay Gundogan scored from the penalty spot, with Bayern Munich’s Xabi Alonso and Philipp Lahm slipping as they took their kicks.

Guardiola reflected that penalty shootouts are more of a lottery and though they were the better team, luck was not on their side last night.

“And penalties ultimately come down to luck. In Leverkusen, we prevailed; on this occasion we didn't. Maybe it sort of balances out what happened in the match in Dortmund.

“On that occasion we weren't great but we won 1-0. This time around we were better, but BVB left the pitch as winners."
