Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres is pleased with his match-winning goal against Villarreal last night, saying that the win will take Los Rojiblancos closer to Champions League qualification.

Torres scored the only goal in a closely fought encounter at the Madrigal last night as he latched on to a defensive mistake by the Yellow Submarine to break the deadlock in the 74th minute.

The win sees Diego Simeone’s men occupy third spot in the table, six points clear of fourth placed Sevilla as the Madrid giants attempt to secure qualification to next season’s Champions League.

And the former Chelsea striker acknowledged that the match could have gone either way.

“The match could have gone either way at the time, but you cannot say the result is unjust”, the forward was quoted as saying by AS.

Talking about his goal, which came because of his intense pressing, Torres said that it is important to be vigilant and always be on the hunt for the ball.

He further added that the win puts Atletico Madrid closer to their aim of Champions League qualification.

“The ball is the most important thing, you never know what the opposition will try and we must always be vigilant.

"We see the target closer; we know that for the club it is essential to be in the Champions League.”
