Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has hit out at a banner being flown over Anfield asking for him to be sacked.

The plane was organised by a group of Liverpool fans disillusioned with Rodgers' leadership of the club and made an appearance over Anfield for today's Premier League game against QPR.

The Reds ran out 2-1 winners over the struggling R's, with goals from Philippe Coutinho and Steven Gerrard doing the business for the home team.

Liverpool however are still unlikely to finish in the top four this season, while they also came up short in the Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Rodgers was asked about the banner, which read 'Rodgers Out, Rafa In', calling for former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez to be reappointed.

And he joked in a press conference: "I thought it was Rafa's agent that was in it!", before then switching to a more serious tone.

"Football, short memories.

"I was sat here last year nearly winning the league, then there's planes flying over."

Rodgers led Liverpool to second spot in the Premier League last season, producing a thrilling, goal-filled campaign for the Reds, powered by Luis Suarez. Liverpool only narrowly missed out on their first top flight title since 1990, taking the title race to the final day.

However, Rodgers spent over £100m on new players last summer, partly funded by the sale of Suarez to Barcelona, and has attracted criticism, not least for a comment he made about Spurs spending over £100m the previous summer. Rodgers had suggested any side spending over £100m on new players should expect to be challenging for the league title, which the Reds are now well off doing.
