Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has heaped praise on Philippe Coutinho and has backed him to be awarded the Reds’ Player of the Season award.

Coutinho has enjoyed a stellar season at Anfield and has been one of the standout performers for Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool attempt to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League. He has five goals and an equal number of assists in the Premier League.

Rodgers’ men sit fifth in the table, four points adrift of fourth placed Manchester United and with three rounds of matches to go before the season draws to a close, the Reds have an outside chance of finishing among the top four.

And Fowler, who played from 1993 until 2001 and from 2006 until 2007 for the Merseyside giants, feels that the Brazil international has been the best player at Liverpool this season and deserves to take home the Reds’ Player of the Season gong.

"The stand-out player this year has probably been Philippe Coutinho, I'd be surprised if he didn't win it. He has scored goals”, the 40-year-old told the Liverpool site.

Liverpool’s sixth highest all-time goalscorer added that he loved playing behind players of Coutinho’s ilk who create numerous chances for the forwards.

"As a forward, I loved playing with players like that because you knew that you were going to get a few chances in a game.

"He is one of those players that can open up defences; ultimately, the forward players have got to be helping him but he certainly helps the forwards.

"He puts the ball into certain positions where you think it is impossible at times, and some of his footwork in creating space for himself is a joy to watch.

"It's a match made in heaven for any player who plays up front for Liverpool when you've got a player that talented behind you.”
