Rennes coach Philippe Montanier has quashed rumours that forward Paul-Georges Ntep has visited Liverpool's training facilities on two occasions recently and insisted that the Reds would not have courted the player behind the French club's back.

Liverpool have been linked with making a move for Ntep, who has been in good form for Rennes this season, with nine goals and seven assists in Ligue 1 to his name.

It has been claimed that the 22-year-old twice has visited Liverpool's Melwood training ground ahead of a potential move, but Montanier insists such reports are wide of the mark.

Asked at a press conference about the claim, the Rennes coach replied: "This is a rumour and it is false.

"On the Tuesday and the Thursday that are concerned, we know where he was. It wasn't at an airport or on a plane", Montanier continued.

"I have great admiration for Liverpool and when such a club are interested in a player, they do not lower themselves to do things like that. They just call the club concerned."

It remains to be seen whether Reds boss Brendan Rodgers wants Ntep at Anfield, but the Northern Irishman has identified signing attacking players as his key priority over the summer transfer window.

Liverpool have just missed out on PSV Eindhoven's highly rated forward Memphis Depay, being beaten to the Dutchman by rivals Manchester United.
