Schalke president Clemens Tonnies has struck an optimistic note about the Bundesliga side snapping up Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira.

The Germany international is out of contract with Real Madrid this coming summer and has already announced that he will not pen an extension as he searches for pastures new.

He has attracted interest from clubs such as Arsenal, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, but Schalke have long hoped to win the race for his signature.

And Tonnies feels there is every chance of seeing Khedira pull on a Schalke shirt next season, saying the pass-master is "keen" on signing for the club.

The Schalke supremo was quoted as saying by German broadcaster DW: "We are in talks and the signs suggest he is keen on a move to Schalke.

"I would be happy if it works out, but nothing has been signed."

The 28-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at Stuttgart, moved to Real Madrid in 2010 following a productive World Cup campaign with Germany.

Khedira is thought to be keen to return to his homeland after five years in Spain, something which has put Schalke in pole position to snap him up.
