Marseille have initiated contact with Tottenham Hotspur for the transfer of their defensive midfielder Benjamin Stambouli.

Tottenham coughed up around €6m to sign the defensive midfielder from Montpellier last summer but the Frenchman has seen very little action this season.

He has made just ten Premier League appearances and has not played a full 90 minutes of football since late February in the Europa League.

The 24-year-old is believed to be frustrated with life at White Hart Lane and is known to be on the lookout for an escape route this summer.

While there has been talk of interest from Italy with Inter, Roma and Fiorentina keen to sign him, it has been claimed that Marseille are keen to bring back Stambouli to France at the end of the season.

According to French radio station RMC, the Ligue 1 side have established initial contact with Tottenham to get information on the midfielder and are ready to act on their interest soon.

Stambouli earned widespread praise for his performances as a defensive shield in front of the back four at Montpellier in his 112 Ligue 1 appearances and Marseille feel he still has the ability to recapture that form in France.
