Mark Bright has welcomed Crystal Palace's 3-1 win at Anfield against Liverpool on Saturday, but admits he struggles to remember a victory he was involved in at the ground due to a 9-0 thrashing in 1989.

Palace played party poopers in what was Steven Gerrard's final game at Anfield as a Liverpool player, running out 3-1 winners and continuing their fine recent record on the road.

Bright was delighted to see the Eagles triumph, especially as he is still haunted by playing for Palace in a game they lost 9-0 to Liverpool in 1989.

On that 12th September evening, Steve Nicol opened the scoring for Liverpool in the seventh minute, followed by a goal from Steve McMahon in the 15th minute. Ian Rush made it 3-0 on the stroke of half time, while Gary Gillespie (56th minute), Peter Beardsley (61st minute), John Aldridge (67th minute), John Barnes (79th minute) and Glen Hysen (82nd minute) piled on the misery. Nicol then bagged his second of the game at the death to make it 9-0.

Bright wrote on Palace's site: "It is such a good feeling to go to one of the big clubs and get a result, Steve Browett reminded me after the match that he can remember when we won 2-1 up at Anfield in 1991, but I have to say I couldn’t, the 9-0 defeat there kind of scarred my memory."

And the former striker believes that the Eagles put on one of their finest performances of the season in order to bag all three Premier League points.

"I have talked about fine margins in football many times before, I really thought we were unlucky against Chelsea and Manchester United to not take any points, but against Liverpool I think we were fully rewarded with one of our best displays of the season."

Palace now sit 12th in the Premier League standings on 45 points from 37 games. They finish their campaign by taking on Swansea City at Selhurst Park next weekend.
