Argentina national team boss Gerardo Martino has stressed that Angel di Maria’s current run of poor form at Manchester United won’t affect his place with the Albiceleste for this summer’s Copa America.

Following his £59.7m move to Manchester United from Real Madrid last summer, the Argentine started his career brightly in England but his form dropped drastically in the second half of their campaign.

Di Maria has not started a game for Manchester United in weeks and has only made sporadic appearances from the bench over the last few matches.

However, Martino is not concerned about the winger’s form and has stressed that he will play a key role for the national team during this summer’s Copa America.

The former Barcelona coach said that players do suffer from lack of form from time to time but stressed that he has full faith in Di Maria’s quality and ability as a footballer.

“At times it may happen that players with long international careers go through a rough patch at their clubs”, Martino was quoted as saying by Bundesligapremier.it.

“But that doesn’t mean they will stop receiving calls from the national team.”

The Argentine boss continued: “Angel di Maria is a good example; it is clear that he would have preferred things to be much better and would like to be the player that he was for Benfica and Real Madrid.

“But do not for one moment think that his current situation could jeopardise his chances of taking part in the Copa America.”

Despite rumours of Paris Saint-Germain being interested in him, Manchester United are ready to back their record signing to rediscover his form next season.
