Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed his modus operandi to gauge the quality of a player.

Wenger has been credited with resurrecting many a career during his 19-year managerial rein at Arsenal. Gunners legend Tony Adams famously had issues, which were addressed under the Frenchman’s tutelage and the defender went on to become one of the greatest players in the club’s history.

Arsenal’s record goalscorer Thierry Henry had his fledgling career revived under the 65-year-old’s management when he bought the misfiring marksman from Juventus and turned him into the club’s record goalscorer.

Wenger’s time at the north London outfit is replete with such success stories and he has revealed his modus operandi of identifying talent.

The Frenchman lets newcomers play with his team’s best players and the new arrivals' link-up with the established stars gives the manager a good understanding of the player’s abilities. He has cited Robert Pires’ story to illustrate his point.

“If it’s an offensive player I always put them alongside very good players in the small matches when they arrive for their first training sessions”, Wenger told his club’s site in an interview.

“Then you see how much these players give them the ball. I’ll give you a concrete example.

“When I signed Robert Pires, in the first small-sided training game, I put him in the same team as Dennis Bergkamp.

“After five minutes I knew how good he was because Bergkamp kept giving him the ball!

“So Bergkamp thought he was a good player, they linked up well together so then you know you have won the battle. Of course you put them in conditions in training where you can see if other players think they are good.

“That’s always very important, because players want to be respected by the other players in the dressing room.

“Also it’s important that they can be in an environment where they can express their talent, so you want to do that as early as you can in a training session.”
