Germany defender Mats Hummels has rejected a chance to join Manchester United and opted to stay at Borussia Dortmund, according to German daily Bild.

The Dortmund captain was Louis van Gaal’s number one defensive target for the summer and he was keen to make a big money offer to take him to Old Trafford before the start of the new season.

Despite speculation surrounding his future reaching fever pitch over the last few months, Hummels maintained that he was still considering his options but now it has been claimed that he has decided to reject a chance to move to England with Manchester United.

The defender, whose contract runs out in 2017, has decided to stay at Dortmund beyond the summer and help the club to recover from a tough season.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said: “It was natural that Mats was thinking about his future.

“But I have always pointed that he is also part of our future plans.”

With Hummels set to stay at the club, Dortmund are keen to reward him with new contract and a hefty pay rise.

Van Gaal is expected to sign central defenders this summer but will now look for other options in the market as the German defender is seemingly unavailable for a transfer.
