Manchester United have confirmed that Radamel Falcao has returned to Monaco following his season-long loan at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils snapped Falcao up from the Ligue 1 side last summer, shouldering his considerable wage packet and paying a fee for his services for the season.

The Premier League club had an option contained in the deal to keep the 29-year-old on a permanent basis for a fee of around €53m.

But Falcao has struggled in the English top flight, finding it difficult to score and hold down a starting spot.

He was nowhere to be seen when Manchester United finished their season with a 0-0 draw away at Hull City today and the club have now confirmed his departure.

Manager Louis van Gaal was quick to thank the Colombian for his efforts, telling his club's site: "Falcao is a top professional and a good human being.

"On behalf of myself and everyone at the club I would like to wish him well for the future", the Dutchman added.

Falcao has been linked with Italian pair Juventus and AC Milan.
