Manchester United defender Phil Jones has praised "terrific" Victor Valdes for his performance between the sticks yesterday against Hull City.

The 33-year-old managed his first start in a Manchester United shirt yesterday, putting in an impressive showing to keep the Tigers at bay over the course of the entire 90 minutes.

Jones, who was placed just ahead of him in the heart of defence, feels that the former Barcelona man did a wonderful job, managing a number of brilliant saves.

Jones also commended the Spaniard for his impressive English speaking skills, which he believes were crucial for them in communicating during the match.

“He was terrific”, Jones was quoted as saying by his club's official website.

“He pulled off some wonderful saves for us. He was key at vital moments in the game and they threw a lot at us today but he was always there and he stood firm.

"Credit to him because he is a great goalkeeper. He has very good English and he is good at communicating."

Valdes' countryman and club team-mate Juan Mata was also full of praise for the veteran goalkeeper, insisting that yesterday's opportunity was a reward for all the hard work that the goalkeeper has been putting in on the training ground every week.

"It was a great experience for him and also a reward for his good job at the training ground every week.

"On top of that, he completed a great game with a few big saves."
