Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has said that he relished playing in the Champions League – a competition he dubs the “Holy Grail.”

Van der Sar enjoyed a six-year spell at Old Trafford after landing at the Red Devils from Fulham and he went on to have a remarkable career with the Premier League giants.




Through the course of his time at the club, the Dutchman won four league titles, two League Cups and the Champions League in 2008.

Reflecting upon his experiences of playing in the elite club competition, the 44-year-old said that he relished playing in the tournament and enjoyed not just the actual matches but all the other bits associated with the Champions League.
 


“The Champions League is the place to be and with all the money that goes into the competition, it's the Holy Grail”, he was quoted as saying by the Manchester United website.

“It wasn’t just the games I enjoyed, but also the build-up to them during the day.

“Then, with the floodlights on and perhaps a wet pitch, people were always up for a great game.

“You'd walk out and hear the roar of the fans… it's amazing to play in front of a full house, in a competition that the whole world is watching.”

Manchester United have qualified for the Champions League after finishing fourth in the league standings this season; they will be returning to the compteition they have won three times after a year's absence.
