Iker Casillas has warned David de Gea that he will have to fight for the number one jersey if he joins Real Madrid this summer.

The Manchester United goalkeeper’s contract runs out next summer and he is yet to sign a new lucrative deal with the club, which has led to speculation surrounding his future at the club.

Real Madrid are knocking on Manchester United’s door for the Spaniard and believe he is the ability to become the long term successor to Casillas.

The veteran shot-stopper is open to the idea of De Gea joining Real Madrid and said competition for places is always a good sign at any club.

However, he stressed that though his younger compatriot has been Manchester United’s Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons, he would still need to compete with him to become the first choice goalkeeper at Real Madrid.

But he added that De Gea is a talented custodian and his experience of playing for a big club such as Manchester United would serve him well if he joins Real Madrid.

“If De Gea does come here, he'll be welcomed”, Casillas told Cadena SER.

“Competition is healthy – there is no clause in my contract which states that I have to be first choice; we'll have to compete for a place like we do with Spain.

“De Gea is a great bloke and a goalkeeper for the present and the future. He can handle pressure and the experience he has had at Manchester United will have served him well.”
