Southampton have rejected a £10m bid for right-back Nathaniel Clyne from Liverpool, according to the BBC.

The Merseyside outfit are looking to strengthen in the right-back department as Glen Johnson’s existing contract will expire in June.

Last summer’s loan arrival from Atletico Madrid, Javier Manquillo, has failed to make his mark and Liverpool are keen to sign Clyne to boost the right side of their defence.

Clyne has shone for Southampton since he joined them in the summer of 2012 from Crystal Palace and has been impressive in his 41 appearances in all competitions for Ronald Koeman’s side this season. He has also netted three goals this term.

The 24-year-old has one year left on his current contract with the Saints and Liverpool are expected to make an improved offer to prise him away from St. Mary’s.

Last year, Liverpool signed Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and defender Dejan Lovren from the south coast outfit at a combined cost of around £50m.

However, Southampton are keen to keep their side intact and build on their seventh placed finish this season.

The England international’s performances have also attracted interest from Premier League champions Chelsea and Manchester United.
