Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer has lavished praise on Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The German champions have been mooted to be on Gundogan's tail, along with Arsenal and Manchester United, after the midfielder refused to extend his contract with Dortmund.

Gundogan has also asked to be sold this summer, something Dortmund admit they are now looking to do. Sammer is pleased with the clarity surrounding Gundogan's situation and has talked up the midfielder, who he feels recovered from missing last season and a chunk of the current campaign through a back injury very well.

The sporting director told Sky Deutschland: "He is a wonderful player who has set out his plans.

"Gundogan has taken positive steps with his development after a serious [back] injury", he continued.

"He too is an interesting player, there's no question."

It has been claimed in some quarters that Dortmund have already agreed a fee to sell Gundogan to Bayern Munich.

If true this summer would be the third consecutive year Dortmund have strengthened their main domestic rivals following the transfers of Mario Gotze (2013) and Robert Lewandowski (2014).
