Liverpool officials met Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio yesterday in a Milanese hotel to discuss a deal for Mateo Kovacic.

The English giants have been monitoring the young Croatian midfielder for months and have been keen to take him to Anfield this summer.

Though Inter stressed publicly that Kovacic is not for sale, privately they are ready to put him on the chopping block to raise funds for their own spending spree.

The Nerazzurri are aware that they need to sell before they look to strengthen their squad and are ready to listen to offers for the 21-year-old midfielder at the end of the season.

Liverpool have moved quickly to establish their interest in the midfielder and have taken some rapid steps over the last few days in order to get the deal done for Kovacic.
