Brazilian defender Marquinhos believes Paris Saint-Germain need to win the Champions League to be considered as a European heavyweight.

PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi has splashed the cash over the last few seasons to attract some of the best players in the world football to the Parc des Princes.

His investment has yielded three back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and PSG are France’s strongest challengers in European football, but Champions League success still eludes the Parisians.

Though a quarter-final appearance this season has shown that the club are progressing in the competition, PSG are yet to become a legitimate contender to win the trophy and Marquinhos feels this needs to change.

While the Brazilian admits winning the Champions League is easier said than done, he stressed that without success in the competition PSG cannot count themselves amongst the top dogs in Europe.

When asked whether PSG are one of the big European clubs, the defender said in an interview to L’Equipe: “We are still missing a lot.

“Winning the Champions League is very difficult, it requires experience but we are on the right track.

“Winning three, perhaps four trophies is already a good achievement but if we want to reach the next level, we must do more than that.

“The biggest goal is to win the Champions League because it is the most difficult trophy to obtain but we are also eyeing the other competitions.”

He also added that their achievements in France should not be belittled and said: “What we have achieved in France is not easy; no team have ever done it.”
