Manchester United goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek has told David de Gea that he can become one of the greatest custodians at world football if he stays put at Old Trafford.

There is currently a question mark over De Gea's future at Manchester United as he has just one year left on his contract and has so far resisted putting pen to paper on a lucrative new deal.

Real Madrid are interested in De Gea, with the Spaniard tempted by the prospect of a move back home.

But Hoek has pleaded with De Gea to stay the course at Manchester United and write himself into the history books.

"He is now at one of the biggest clubs in the world and at a very high level", Hoek, one of Louis van Gaal's right hand men at Manchester United, was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.

"Here De Gea can grow into one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

"He is only 24 years old, which is young for a goalkeeper and he is very complete. De Gea actually has all the facets.

"He's good at building and on the line too. If he stays at United, nothing stands in his way in terms of becoming one of the best.

"Here he can reach the status of Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar."

Manchester United are waiting patiently for De Gea to make a decision about his future, with the Red Devils wary of Real Madrid doing all they can to lure him to the Bernabeu.
