Southampton boss Ronald Koeman feels that Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid would dominate the Premier League if they were to play in it, but insists that they wouldn’t be decimating teams the way they do in La Liga.

This season, Barcelona have been crowned the Spanish champions with 94 points; they narrowly edged out Real Madrid, who ended their campaign in second with 92 points.

In England, Chelsea won their first league title in five years after they finished with 87 points, eight points ahead of second placed Manchester City.

Koeman, who took charge of a depleted Southampton side and guided them to a seventh place finish in the league and with it a place in the Europa League next season, had a six-year spell with Barcelona and scored the goal that won the Catalan outfit their first ever Champions League.

Weighing in on the competitiveness in the Spanish and English leagues, the Dutchman feels that Barcelona and Real Madrid have the quality to occupy top spots in the Premier League, but with the English top flight being more competitive, they would find it hard to pummel teams by huge margins.

“These results do not happen here.

“In the Premier League you have to give 100 per cent in every game, even if your opponent is in the relegation positions, because they have enough quality to win.”
