Virgil van Dijk has piled the pressure on Celtic by asking the club to sell him this summer, claiming he is ready for the next stage of his career.

The Netherlands international has been linked with an exit from the Scottish champions at points over the last year, which clubs such as Arsenal and Sunderland mooted to be interested in securing his services.

But Celtic have been steadfast in their refusal to sell, while Van Dijk himself has not pushed for a move. That stance however appears to have now changed, with the Dutchman desperate to test himself in a more challenging league.

The defender told Voetbal International: "I'm learning in Scotland every day, but I also know there is more. I want more. It's time for the next challenge.

"I am 24 this year, I'm ready for something new – more pressure, better opponents", the defender added.

And Van Dijk says he has been left disappointed by Celtic's refusal to sell him to a Premier League club in the past.

"Since then [when I joined Celtic] there has been interest every summer and winter, especially from the Premier League", the Dutchman explained.

"I stood there open to it. But Celtic decided not to sell me at that time.

"Yes, I was disappointed."

Van Dijk has now urged Celtic to soften their stance this summer and consider what bids are placed on their table for his services, even though he knows they are counting on him for the Champions League qualifiers.

"They must understand that as a footballer, sometimes it's time to make a move.

"Of course the Champions League millions are important for Celtic, but they cannot dismiss any interest.

"If the correct amount is placed on the table, then they will really think about it, yes.

"If Celtic want to earn money from me, the club must act now."

The defender picked up the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish League Cup with Celtic this season.

And the Bhoys are keen not to lose Van Dijk ahead of their attempt to navigate a path through the Champions League qualifying rounds and into the group stage.
