Neil Redfearn is to return to Leeds United on 1st July to take up his former role in charge of the club's academy.

The former Barnsley midfielder served as Leeds' head coach last season, stepping up to take the job after the departure of Darko Milanic, and steered the Whites clear of relegation trouble and on a spell of impressive form in the new year.

However, amid public criticism from the club's owner Massimo Cellino, Redfearn was not offered a contract extension, with instead the terms of his agreement being honoured, that being he could return to his job at the academy if he was not kept on as head coach.

And Redfearn, who was told by Cellino to "respect the chairman" and dubbed "like a baby" and "weak" has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that he is going back to Leeds.

The former midfielder said: "My contract had said that if I wasn’t offered the coaching job, then I will go back to being the academy manager.

"That is what will be happening and I will go back on the first of July, as it stands at the moment.

"I have had a bit of interest from other people, but to be honest, I am a fair way into this [academy post] now", he added.

Leeds appointed Uwe Rosler as Redfearn's replacement and the German has already set about putting his own coaching staff in place.

Rosler has brought in Rob Kelly as his assistant and Richard Hartis as the club's new goalkeeping coach.
