Southampton defender and Chelsea target Toby Alderweireld has indicated that he is not too keen to return to Atletico Madrid this summer.

Only a bit part player in Atletico Madrid’s league title winning campaign last season, the Belgian centre half enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at Southampton this term and played a major role in forming one of the best defensively organised teams in the Premier League.

Ronald Koeman is keen to keep Alderweireld at St. Mary’s and the defender himself has indicated that he will like to stay at Southampton beyond the summer.

However, he revealed that the Spanish giants want him back at the club next season and have conveyed that message to his father.

But Alderweireld said that he is happy at Southampton and indicated that he is not keen to return to Spain to spend one more season warming the bench at the Vicente Calderon.

“My father has recently spoken with Atletico and they want me back”, Alderweireld told Sporza.

“But I do have a feeling that I am at a club that I like.

“I have shown my ability in the Premier League and I do not want to spend another season sitting on the bench.”

His performances for Koeman’s team have also brought him into the attention of Jose Mourinho, who is said to be keen to take him to Chelsea this summer.
