Manchester United and AC Milan target Mats Hummels is ready to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The German defender is the number one target for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal as he looks to reshape his side’s defence before the start of the new season.

However, Manchester United have so far failed to find a breakthrough in their pursuit of Hummels and AC Milan’s entry into the chase has further complicated matters for Van Gaal’s men.

While Dortmund have been insisting that the 26-year-old will stay at the Westfalenstadion beyond the summer and are already said to be preparing to offer him a new deal, the defender himself has provided no such assurances to the BVB fans.

In the wake of Jurgen Klopp’s departure from the club, Hummels has been pondering over his future at the club and it has been claimed that he has decided to leave Dortmund before the start of the new season.

With no European football next term, Hummels doesn’t believe Dortmund are in a position to challenge Bayern Munich’s dominance in Germany and is keen to move to greener pastures.

Manchester United may well be confident of beating AC Milan to the defender’s signature if he becomes available this summer, but the Rossoneri are splashing the cash as they seek to return to former glories.
