Manchester United are ready to make a bid for Monaco right-back Fabinho this summer.

Rafael da Silva’s frequent injury problems this season have forced Louis van Gaal to play Antonio Valencia at right back and the Dutchman is keen to bring in a new face to strengthen that area of his squad.

While a number of full-backs have already been linked with a move to Old Trafford, the Manchester United manager’s gaze has turned towards Monaco’s Fabinho.

The 21-year-old has been a constant presence in Leonardo’s Jardim’s Monaco team this season and is versatile enough to play as a defensive midfielder, a quality that Van Gaal very much appreciates.

According to French sports daily L’Equipe, the Manchester United manager is impressed enough to sanction a €14m bid for the player and has asked the club to make their move.

Schooled at Fluminense’s youth academy, the 21-year-old arrived in Europe with Portuguese outfit Rio Ave and has even spent time with Real Madrid Castilla.

Fabinho joined Monaco in 2013 initially on a loan deal before making a permanent switch last summer for a fee of around €8m.

A near constant fixture in the Monaco first eleven, he has made 53 appearances for the club this season across all competitions.

Fabinho also made his debut for Brazil against Mexico earlier this month and played the full 90 minutes against Honduras last week.
