Tiago Ilori's father says his son will be given a chance to impress by Liverpool in pre-season, having a chance to stake his claim to stay with the Reds for the upcoming campaign.

The Portuguese defender, who is currently in the Czech Republic with Portugal's Under-21 side at the European Under-21 Championship, has just spent the season on loan in France with Bordeaux.

It has been suggested the defender could be offloaded by Liverpool, but Ilori's father claims his son will be given an opportunity to shine in pre-season by Reds manager Brendan Rodgers.

Kola Ilori told Portuguese radio station Antena 1: "We spoke with Liverpool last week about Tiago's future.

"They said he will have an opportunity and will go on the pre-season tour of Thailand", the defender's father added.

The starlet's father also dismissed thoughts that Ilori could turn out for England at senior international level, despite being eligible to play for the Three Lions due to being born in England.

"You can see it on the pitch, he is 100 per cent dedicated to Portugal, is fully dedicated to his team-mates, to the team.

"If you ask him what he prefers, there's no doubt he will stay that he prefers Portugal."

Liverpool splashed out £7m to sign the highly rated 22-year-old from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2013.
