Rangers assistant manager David Weir has talked up the importance of new signing Danny Wilson, and the leadership and experience he brings into the club.

Wilson, who won the Scottish Championship last season with Hearts, has been tipped to bring leadership and direction to his new club by Weir.

In an interview with Rangers TV, Weir said of Wilson: “He’s vocal, he is the leader, a potential captain. He is one of those types that are few and far between. So that’s another bonus we are getting with Danny here.”

The former defender believes the return of Wilson to Rangers will set the tone for next season. Rangers will hope to get back into the Premiership after narrowly missing out last season, when they lost in the playoffs to Motherwell.

“He’s got the attributes to come in and be the right type of person, set the tone for everyone else and be a part of what we are trying to do here”, added the 45-year-old.

Weir, who was a key member of the side when Wilson made his Rangers bow, has talked up the 23-year-old’s qualities, which caught his eye in his first spell at the Ibrox club.

“He was so composed and he took to the difficult games really, really well. He enjoyed it if anything and played in some big games at that time; European games, domestic games, in games that meant a lot.

“It was a lot for a young lad to take on but he took it on really well and enjoyed and embraced the challenge and made the most of it. Obviously, he moved on very quickly afterwards for a variety of reasons”, he added.

Wilson became new manager Mark Warburton’s first signing for the Gers when he put pen to paper yesterday morning.

The 23-year-old led Hearts to promotion to the Premiership in 2014/15 and will hope for a similar campaign with his new club next season.
