Real Madrid have revived their interest in Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno and have contacted his agent as a contingency plan if a deal for David de Gea falls through, according to Madrid-based daily Marca.

Los Blancos have been keen on acquiring the Manchester United custodian, who has a year left on his existing contract with the Red Devils.

However, so far no conclusion has been reached with Louis van Gaal’s side and the goalkeeper’s future hangs in the balance.

Real Madrid have contacted Leno’s agent and advised him to sit tight, as in case the De Gea move falls through they would pounce on the Bayer Leverkusen number 1.

Leno is one of the most highly-rated young goalkeeper’s in European football and last term he made 48 appearances in all competitions for Roger Schmidt’s side as they finished fourth in the league standings.

Still only 23, the Germany Under-21 international has been a first team regular for Bayer Leverkusen since 2011.

Leno has an €18m release clause with Bayer Leverkusen, making him a cheaper option for Real Madrid compared to De Gea.
