Manchester United have lodged an offer of £28.6m for Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos after becoming convinced he wants to leave the Bernabeu, according to the BBC.

Ramos is involved in a contract wrangle with Los Blancos after deciding his current deal fails to reflect his standing at the club. He is also unhappy no extension has been agreed with Los Blancos to his present contract, which expires in 2017.

Manchester United are searching for a top notch centre-back and are now firmly in the hunt for Ramos, going on the offensive with Real Madrid after months of being on the back-foot over goalkeeper David de Gea.

It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils' bid will be considered acceptable by Real Madrid, but the omens do not look promising.

Indeed, Los Blancos' new coach Rafael Benitez is desperate to keep hold of Ramos as he views him as a leader at the club.

And Florentino Perez, Real Madrid's president, also remains a firm fan of the 29-year-old.

However, if Ramos openly pushes to leave the Spanish giants, keeping him at the Bernabeu could prove tricky for Los Blancos.

Ramos joined Real Madrid in 2005 from Sevilla and has 445 appearances for the club to his name.
