Bayer Leverkusen are keen on signing Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez this summer, according to Madrid-based daily AS.

Hernandez is a product of Atletico Madrid’s youth academy and he has progressed through the ranks of the club he joined in 2007.

Last season, he straddled between Los Rojiblancos’ first team and their reserve side and ultimately ended with four senior appearances in all competitions.

Diego Simeone’s side have already sold Miranda to Inter Milan and are also grappling with the possible departure of Toby Alderweireld, meaning that they might be short of personnel in defence.

Hernandez would prefer to stay at the Vicente Calderon, but he is likely to play second fiddle to the first choice pairing of Uruguay internationals Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin.

As a consequence, he might be tempted to move to the Bundesliga side in search of regular first team action under manager Roger Schmidt.

A French citizen, Hernandez has been capped by the France Under-19 side.
