Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is unsurprised at new club-mate Nathaniel Clyne’s rapid rise in the game.

Clyne, who signed for the Reds yesterday from Southampton, came up through the ranks at Crystal Palace and made his professional debut with the Eagles in the Championship as a 17-year-old. And ex-Southampton captain and his former Saints team-mate Lallana hasn’t been surprised at Clyne’s progress.

In an interview with Liverpool’s official website, England international Lallana said: “I've not been surprised by his progress."

Lallana, who was Southampton’s captain when Clyne signed for the Saints, revealed he saw the defender’s potential at a young age and feels he merits his Liverpool move.

“When Southampton signed him from Palace, you could see he had potential. Since then, he's developed and learnt the game – he's turned from a kid into a man on the pitch”, added Lallana.

The midfielder has talked up Clyne’s attributes, and believes the 24-year-old is a solid right-back who is equally adept at defending and attacking.

"He's as solid as they come for a right-back and getting forward, he's got goals in his locker.

“In one versus one situations defensively, he's the kind of full-back you just don't want to come up against.”

Clyne became Liverpool’s sixth summer acquisition when they announced his move officially yesterday. The defender will replace Glen Johnson, who was released by the Anfield club last month, in the first team.
