Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has stressed the important of a good pre-season for both individual players and the team.

Most of the Manchester United squad are expected to report for training on Monday and the team will fly out to the US later this month for their pre-season tour.

Giggs has been part of numerous pre-season tours for Manchester United over the years and now as assistant to Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, he has different responsibilities to fulfil.

However, the Welshman stressed the importance of individual players having a good pre-season under their belt as he feels it helps them to cope with the demands of the regular campaign better.

He also added that over the years the pre-season games have become tougher and the teams are taking them more seriously compared to the past.

“I think you’ve seen a lot of players play well in pre-season and take that into the first part of the season”, Giggs told the club’s official website.

“It’s a massive thing as an individual to get the best out of yourself. If you can get off to a good start it gives you confidence so you definitely can’t take the pre-season games lightly.

“Gone are the days when you’d play easy games – every match is tough and every stadium is sold out so you want to do well for the fans that have come to watch you.”

Giggs also feels that the pre-season tour is important as a team building measure for the Red Devils as fresh faces in the squad gets time to get used to their team-mates and the coaching staff get more time to work on certain areas of their game.

“The tour is always a crucial part of pre-season”, added the Welshman.

“It’s a time for new players to get to know their team-mates, and the coaches can spend quality time with the team and work on certain things going into the season.

“It’s not always the case that if you have a good pre-season [as a team] you’re going to go on and have a great season, but the main thing about pre-season is to get through it with fit players, players playing enough games and no injuries.

“That’s the main objective.”
